Most run-offs in bends are not caused by a bend that is too tight, but by an entry speed that is too high. Understanding the four phases means understanding why.
The four phases
Each phase has one job – mixing them up is what makes a bend dangerous.

Approach: look far into the bend, reduce speed and brake – before you turn the wheel.
Turn in: steer smoothly, without jerks. The vehicle is already at the right speed.
Follow through: constant speed, steady steering. No braking, no sharp acceleration.
Accelerate: as soon as the wheel comes back and the view opens up, you can pick up speed again.
Remember: braking mid-bend asks the tyres to work in two directions at once – and that is exactly where grip runs out.
Centrifugal force
In a bend your vehicle is pushed outwards. This force rises steeply with speed: at twice the speed it is roughly four times as strong. A little too fast is therefore not a little more dangerous, but considerably more.
It acts on what you carry, too:
An unsecured load shifts towards the outside of the bend.
A tall vehicle with a roof load becomes noticeably less stable.
A trailer amplifies the movement and can jack-knife.
Tightening bends
Some bends close up progressively. You only notice once you are committed – and by then slowing down is difficult.
The remedy: enter wide, exit close to the inside edge. This lengthens your field of vision and leaves you a reserve if the bend tightens. On mountain roads and blind bends, always stay well to the right – someone may come the other way cutting the corner.
Remember: never drive faster than the distance you can see.
