Eco-Friendly Driving

A forward-looking, calm driving style saves fuel, lowers emissions and reduces noise. Consideration for the environment is part of the traffic rules.

Eco-Drive – the key rules

  • Shift up early and drive at low revs (in the highest sensible gear where possible).

  • Look ahead: keep a steady speed, ease off the accelerator in good time, use momentum instead of accelerating and braking hard.

  • Switch off the engine during longer stops (level crossing, longer waits).

  • Keep the tyre pressure correct and remove unnecessary load (e.g. a roof rack).

Avoid noise and emissions

Unnecessary noise is forbidden: no revving the engine, no needless to-and-fro, no improper use of the horn. Unnecessary idling (stationary noise) is also to be avoided.

Excessive exhaust emissions indicate a technical defect – comply with the prescribed emission checks (see Roadworthiness).

Why it matters

Fuel-efficient driving protects not only the environment but also your wallet and the vehicle. The test asks about environmental awareness specifically.
