Traffic Theory Course
The traffic theory course (VKU) is Switzerland’s compulsory traffic-awareness course on the way to your licence. Here is the whole content explained simply – with diagrams that show what really matters on the road.
The VKU isn’t about memorising rules. It sharpens your “traffic sense”: spotting hazards early, reading other road users, understanding the physics, and knowing yourself. That’s what separates safe driving from risky driving – especially in the first few years, when young new drivers cause nearly twice as many crashes.
NoteImportant: the VKU must be taken at an officially approved driving school or with a certified driving instructor. This course is not an official course – it clearly summarises the four official modules and helps you understand and retain what’s taught there.
✓What you gain
- Spot hazards earlier
- Understand braking and centrifugal forces
- Protect vulnerable road users
- Assess yourself realistically
▸How the VKU works
- 8 lessons of 45 minutes
- 4 modules of 2 lessons
- At an approved driving school
- Course certificate to register for the test
Only the applicable Swiss regulations (SVG/LCR, VRV/OCR, VZV/OAC) and the information from your driving school and cantonal road traffic office are binding.
