The right light at the right time makes you visible without dazzling others. Switzerland has clear rules for this.
Since 1 January 2014 there is a daytime lights requirement: motor vehicles must drive with daytime running lights or dipped headlights even during the day. Driving without them is fined.
Dipped headlights are the standard lighting. They are compulsory:
at dusk, in darkness and at night,
in tunnels,
in poor visibility (rain, fog, snowfall).
You may use the main beam only when no one is dazzled:
Dip for oncoming traffic and when following another vehicle.
In built-up areas with street lighting the main beam is generally not used.
You must also dip when crossing the path of trains or boats.
Front fog lights may only be switched on in fog, heavy snowfall or heavy rain.
The rear fog light is permitted when visibility is below 50 metres. In better visibility it must be switched off, as it dazzles.
Parking lights only serve to mark a parked vehicle. In a breakdown or danger you use the hazard warning lights.
