Tunnels

In a tunnel visibility is limited, evading is barely possible and a fire is especially dangerous. With the right reflexes you stay able to act in an emergency.

Before entering the tunnel

  • Switch on the dipped headlights (even during the day).

  • Take off your sunglasses so your eyes adapt faster.

  • Keep a sufficient distance from the vehicle in front.

  • Switch on the radio – traffic announcements will warn you.

In the tunnel

Keep your lane, drive steadily and overtake only where it is permitted and safe. Observe the signalled maximum speed and the minimum distance. Turning around and reversing are forbidden in the tunnel.

In a traffic jam in the tunnel

  • Switch on the hazard warning lights.

  • Keep your distance from the vehicle ahead (room for emergency vehicles).

  • Switch off the engine.

  • Stay in the vehicle and follow instructions via radio or loudspeaker.

In a fire or breakdown in the tunnel

  1. 1

If possible, drive out of the tunnel.

  2. 2

If not: park the vehicle as far right as possible, switch off the engine, leave the key in the ignition (so it can be moved).

  3. 3

Report the fire immediately (SOS recess / emergency phone) and, if it is safe, fight it with the fire extinguisher.

  4. 4

Leave the tunnel on foot via the marked emergency exits – never walk back towards the entrance, but follow the escape route.
