Overtaking correctly

To overtake, do not get too close to the vehicle in front. This improves visibility and acceleration.

First look ahead to see if the overtaking lane is clear and, above all, if oncoming traffic can pass safely.

Look in the mirrors! Do not overtake if another vehicle has already started to overtake from behind.

Side view! If everything is all right, give the signal (flash). Swing out carefully. Overtaking is always a risk!

Therefore, do not overtake if you stop or turn shortly afterwards!

When driving in parallel lines and in built-up areas on roads with several lanes in the same direction, passing other vehicles on the right is permitted, provided they do not stop to give way to pedestrians. However, overtaking on the right by swerving and re-turning is prohibited.

Drivers may overtake marked school buses that have stopped and have their hazard lights on only slowly and with special care; if necessary, they must stop.

Many dangerous situations arise from an incorrect assessment of the overtaking path. Especially the speed of oncoming vehicles is difficult to judge.

For overtaking, the speed difference between the overtaking vehicle and the vehicle being overtaken should be at least 20 km/h (calculation of overtaking distance).

Changing to other lanes for overtaking is prohibited on single-lane roads, except on lanes marked with the same destinations.

Vehicle drivers must maintain a lateral distance of at least 1 m when overtaking tracked vehicles. On narrow roads, they may overtake only after the driver of the tracked vehicle has cleared the road for them. The driver must facilitate overtaking, if necessary by stopping.

Crossing and overtaking of columns of pedestrians is permitted only at slow speed. As a rule, funeral processions are not overtaken.

Overtaking and passing obstacles is permitted only if the necessary space is clear and unobstructed and oncoming traffic is not hindered. In column traffic, overtaking is only allowed who is sure to be able to turn in time and without obstructing other vehicles.

Anyone overtaking must show particular consideration for other road users, especially those he intends to overtake.

Vehicles may not overtake on blind bends, on and immediately before level crossings without barriers and before crests, on road junctions only if they are clearly visible and the right of way of others is not impaired.

Vehicles may not be overtaken if the driver indicates the intention to turn left or if he stops in front of a pedestrian crossing to allow pedestrians to cross the road.

Vehicles that have latched on to turn left may only be overtaken on the right Give way to the speeding vehicle that is announcing its intention to overtake. The vehicle being overtaken must not increase its speed.

The driver who wants to overtake must swing out carefully and must not obstruct following vehicles. He must not overtake if there are obstacles in front of the vehicle in front, such as construction sites, vehicles in lane or pedestrians crossing the road.

After overtaking, the driver must turn again as soon as there is no more danger for the overtaken vehicle.

Drivers of heavy motor vehicles must make it easier for faster vehicles to overtake them by driving on the far right, keeping a distance of at least 100 m between them and, if necessary, taking evasive action. This also applies to other motor vehicles if they drive slowly.

The driver must not overtake a vehicle that is overtaking another vehicle, unless one of the overtaken vehicles is a motorcycle or bicycle and the road is wide and clear, or if he is on a directionally separated road with at least three lanes in the same direction
