Level crossings and barriers

Stop at level crossings when barriers close or signals are given to stop, and, where there are no such signals, when railway vehicles are approaching.

Level crossings are marked by red and white striped barriers or half-barriers, flashing light signals (“single flashing light”, “alternating flashing light”), acoustic signals (bell) and light signals.

Closed or closing barriers or half-barriers, flashing red light as well as acoustic signals (bell) mean “Stop!”.

If a level crossing is located in a junction controlled by light signals, it can be included in the light signal system

In the event of accidents at level crossings, the parties involved must notify the railway administration immediately.

In the case of longer traffic stops, especially in front of level crossings, the lights must be switched to parking lights.

Road users must not open, drive around, bypass, cross or pass under barriers, including those at airfields and the like. Half-barriers shall be treated in the same way as barriers.

When crossing crossings, any delay must be avoided; vehicles with metal tyres or tracks as well as animal carts and riders may only cross at walking pace.

If heavy motor vehicles have to stop outside built-up areas before level crossings, they must keep a distance of about 100 m from the crossing in order to facilitate overtaking by following vehicles. Riders, drivers of animal carts, herds or single animals shall stop far enough in front of the crossing so as not to frighten them.

On level crossings without barriers, drivers must not overtake anyone, except pedestrians and cyclists with a good view.

Overtaking on level crossings with barriers is not prohibited.

Reversing over level crossings and blind junctions is prohibited.

Voluntary stopping at level crossings is prohibited.

Parking is prohibited within 50 m of level crossings outside built-up areas and within 20 m of level crossings inside built-up areas.

The “tram” signal warns of trams, especially at intersections with trams in built-up areas. Out of town crossings with trams are signalled as level crossings.
