Level crossings and barriers
Stopping at Level Crossings
- When to Stop: Always stop at level crossings when:
- Barriers are closing.
- Signals indicate to stop.
- If there are no signals, stop when railway vehicles are approaching.
- Signs and Signals: Level crossings are marked by:
- Red and white striped barriers or half-barriers.
- Flashing light signals (single or alternating).
- Acoustic signals (bells).
- Light signals to alert drivers.

Level Crossing Signals and Rules
- Stop Signals: Closed or closing barriers, flashing red lights, and acoustic signals (bells) mean “Stop!”
- Traffic Light Control: If a level crossing is part of a junction controlled by traffic lights, it will be included in the light signal system.
- Accident Reporting: In the event of an accident at a level crossing, notify the railway administration immediately.
- Long Stops: During longer traffic stops, especially at level crossings, switch to parking lights.
- Barrier Rules:
- Do not open, drive around, bypass, cross, or pass under barriers, including at airfields.
- Treat half-barriers the same as full barriers.
- Crossing Procedures:
- Avoid delays when crossing.
- Vehicles with metal tires, tracks, animal carts, and riders may only cross at walking pace.
- Distance for Heavy Vehicles: Heavy motor vehicles must stop about 100 m from level crossings to allow following vehicles to overtake. Riders and drivers of animal carts should stop far enough back to avoid frightening their animals.
- Overtaking Rules:
- At level crossings without barriers, do not overtake anyone except pedestrians and cyclists with a clear view.
- Overtaking at level crossings with barriers is allowed.
- Prohibited Actions:
- Reversing over level crossings and blind junctions is prohibited.
- Voluntary stopping at level crossings is also prohibited.
- Parking Restrictions:
- Parking is prohibited within 50 m of level crossings outside built-up areas and within 20 m inside built-up areas.
- Tram Signals: The “tram” signal warns of trams, especially at intersections in built-up areas. Out-of-town crossings with trams are marked as level crossings.
