Passenger Rules for Vehicles

Multi-Track Motor Vehicles:

  • In multi-track motor vehicles (excluding motorcycles), only the number of passengers allowed by the authorized seating capacity may be carried.

Cyclists with Children:

  • Cyclists aged 16 and older may carry one child, aged seven or younger, in a safe child seat.
  • The child seat must protect the child’s legs and should not obstruct the cyclist’s ability to ride.

Passenger Regulations for Different Vehicles

Motorcycles:

  • Only one passenger is allowed on motorcycles. The passenger must sit astride and be able to use footrests or running boards.
  • Children under seven years old may only be carried in an officially approved child seat.

Agricultural Vehicles:

  • Only working personnel and family members of the owner or employees may be transported on agricultural motor vehicles and trailers, and only during agricultural journeys.

Trailers:

  • On trailers, only personnel responsible for driving, braking, or monitoring the load may be carried. In local traffic, personnel for loading and unloading may also be included.

Loading Areas:

  • On the loading areas of motor vehicles (excluding motorcycles and agricultural vehicles), only personnel for loading, unloading, or monitoring the load may be carried. Other working personnel may travel on journeys between the company and the workplace.
  • Passengers must be seated in designated seats or on a protected loading area.

General Rules:

  • Drivers and passengers are prohibited from holding or throwing objects out of the vehicle, except on closed roads.
  • Climbing on or off moving motor vehicles or streetcars is not allowed, nor is leaning out of the vehicle.
  • No persons are allowed in compartments that cannot be opened from the inside, except for police transports.

Child Safety:

  • Children under seven years old must be secured in seats next to the driver using an ECE-approved child restraint device or another approved child seat.

Seat Belt and Passenger Regulations

Seat Belts:

  • In passenger cars, vans, minibuses, and light semitrailers, both the driver and passengers must wear seat belts while driving.

Children:

  • Children under seven years old may ride in the back seats as long as there are enough seats available.
  • Three children aged seven to twelve years count as two persons for seating purposes.

Trailers:

  • No persons may be carried on trailers attached to motorcycles and bicycles.
  • It is allowed to carry a maximum of two children in a bicycle trailer equipped with protected seats.
