Overtaking

Overtaking on the Left

When overtaking a moving streetcar, it should be done on the right. If that is not possible, overtaking on the left is allowed.

A stopped streetcar may only be overtaken at a slow speed, primarily on the right; if that is not possible, then on the left.

The “Do Not Overtake” signal prohibits drivers of motor vehicles from overtaking multi-lane vehicles and streetcars.

The “No Overtaking for Trucks” signal prohibits drivers of motor vehicles and articulated vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons (as per the vehicle registration document) from overtaking multi-lane moving vehicles and streetcars. However, company cars are exempt from this restriction.

Overtaking Rules

Overtaking Restrictions

Despite the “no overtaking” signals, drivers are allowed to overtake vehicles that cannot exceed 30 km/h (like motorized single-axle vehicles and agricultural vehicles) if it is safe. You can pass streetcars on the right side.

The end of overtaking prohibitions is marked by signals indicating “End of overtaking prohibition” and “End of overtaking ban for trucks.”

Correct Overtaking

  1. Distance: Don’t get too close to the vehicle in front. This improves visibility and allows for better acceleration.
  2. Check Ahead: Ensure the overtaking lane is clear and that oncoming traffic can pass safely.
  3. Mirrors: Always check your mirrors. Don’t overtake if another vehicle is already in the process of overtaking from behind.
  4. Signal: If everything is clear, signal your intention to overtake. Swing out carefully; overtaking is always a risk!

Important Considerations

  • Do not overtake if you plan to stop or turn shortly afterward.
  • In built-up areas with several lanes, passing on the right is allowed if vehicles are not stopping for pedestrians. However, swerving and re-turning to overtake on the right is prohibited.
  • When overtaking school buses with their hazard lights on, do so slowly and carefully; you may need to stop.

Safety and Awareness

  • Always maintain a lateral distance of at least 1 meter when overtaking tracked vehicles. On narrow roads, wait for the tracked vehicle to clear the way.
  • Overtaking and passing columns of pedestrians should only be done at a slow speed; funeral processions should typically not be overtaken.
  • Ensure that the necessary space is clear and unobstructed before overtaking. Do not impede oncoming traffic.
  • Do not overtake on blind bends, at level crossings, or where visibility is poor.

Vehicle Behavior

  • Vehicles signaling a left turn or stopping to let pedestrians cross may not be overtaken.
  • The vehicle being overtaken must not increase its speed.
  • After overtaking, return to your lane as soon as it is safe.

Heavy Vehicles

  • Heavy motor vehicles should facilitate overtaking by keeping to the far right and maintaining a distance of at least 100 m from other vehicles.

General Guidelines

  • Do not overtake a vehicle that is already overtaking another, unless it’s a motorcycle or bicycle on a wide and clear road.
  • On level crossings without barriers, overtaking is only permitted for pedestrians and cyclists with good visibility.

Direction Changes

  • Always announce any change of direction in good time using your turn signal or clear hand signals, particularly during overtaking and turning.
