Light signals
Right of Way on Freeways and Highways
- Right of Way: Users of freeways and highways have the right of way over vehicles on access roads.
- Directional Signals: Black arrows on white additional signs under traffic signals indicate that the signals are valid only for the direction shown.
Traffic Signal System Overview
- Speed Indicators: White light numbers show the speed in kilometers per hour, which must be observed to encounter a green light at the next traffic signal.
- Temporary Lane Closure: The “traffic signal system for temporary lane closure” manages traffic on multi-lane roads and temporarily closes specific lanes.
- Green Arrows: Vertically downward green arrows indicate that traffic is permitted in that lane.
- Yellow Flashing Arrows: Yellow arrows pointing downwards at an angle signal that the driver must leave the lane as soon as possible in the indicated direction.
- Red Cross: Red crossed diagonal bars indicate that the lane is closed; drivers must switch to a lane with green arrows.
- Stop and Yield Signs: “Stop” and “No right of way” signals should be followed at junctions with traffic lights only if traffic is not controlled by signals.
- Emergency Vehicles: Fire department, ambulance, and police vehicles with blue lights and sirens have the right of way, even if traffic is regulated by signals.
Light Signals for Specific Users
- Bicycle Lights: Lights with a bicycle symbol are for cyclists and motorcyclists.
- Pedestrian Lights: Lights with a pedestrian symbol are for pedestrians. They may enter the roadway only when the symbol is green. If the light starts flashing or shows yellow or red, pedestrians must leave the roadway immediately.
Traffic Light Meanings
- Red Light: Means “stop.” If a black contour arrow appears, the stopping order applies only to the indicated direction.
- Flashing Red Light: Used only at level crossings.
- Green Light: Releases traffic. Turning vehicles must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
- Green Arrows: Allow traffic in the indicated direction. If a yellow light is flashing simultaneously, turning vehicles must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.
- Yellow Light: Indicates to stop for vehicles that can still halt before the junction. If seen with a red light, it means to prepare to stop and wait for the green light.
- Yellow Flashing Light: Warns drivers to exercise extra caution.
- Light Signals Announcement: “Light signals” indicate a system where drivers may need to stop.
