Pedestrian Safety Guidelines

  • Cautious Crossing: Pedestrians must step carefully onto the roadway, especially in front of and behind stopping cars.
  • Unimpeded Crossing: They should cross the road without obstruction.
  • Use of Crossings: Pedestrians must use pedestrian crossings, overpasses, or underpasses if these are less than 50 meters away.

Pedestrian Guidelines

  • Walking Direction: On the roadway, pedestrians should walk on the right side if they can only give way there or if they are carrying a vehicle (except a baby carriage). They should avoid frequently changing sides.
  • Prohibition for Pedestrians: The “Prohibition for pedestrians” signal forbids entry onto the street.
  • Use of Pedestrian Way: The “Pedestrian way” signal requires pedestrians to use the designated path.
  • Vehicle Use of Pedestrian Lanes: Pedestrian lanes may only be used by vehicles if they do not hinder pedestrian traffic.
  • Driver Responsibilities: If a vehicle must use the sidewalk, the driver must take special care to give pedestrians the right of way.
  • Unauthorized Paths: Paths unsuitable for motor vehicles or bicycles, like footpaths, must not be used by such vehicles.
  • Bicycle Parking: Bicycles may be parked on the sidewalk if at least 1.50 meters of space is left free for pedestrians. Parking of other vehicles on the sidewalk is prohibited unless indicated by signs or markings. In the absence of such signals, vehicles may stop on the sidewalk only for cargo handling or for letting people in and out, while maintaining a clear 1.50-meter space for pedestrians.
  • Crossing at Junctions: At junctions with traffic control, pedestrians may cross the roadway only when traffic in their direction is clear, except where directed by police or special pedestrian lights.
