Cyclists, Cycle Paths & Lanes

Cyclists and e-bike riders are among the unprotected road users. As a driver you have a special duty of care.

Cycle path and cycle lane – the difference

  • Cycle path: structurally separated from the carriageway. Cars may neither drive on it nor park on it.

  • Cycle lane: marked with a yellow line on the carriageway. You must not drive or park on it. Crossing it is allowed only exceptionally (e.g. when turning) – and only if you do not endanger or obstruct cycle traffic.

Overtaking bikes

Overtake only with sufficient lateral distance (rule of thumb: about 1.5 metres). If there is not enough room, wait until safe overtaking is possible. Expect bikes to wobble or dodge obstacles.

Turning and right of way

  • When turning right, watch the cycle lane and any bikes to your right – they may be going straight on.

  • Bikes on the cycle lane going straight have right of way over the turning car.

  • Watch out for approaching bikes when opening doors ("dooring") and when pulling in.

Good to know

Children up to age 12 may cycle on the pavement where there is no cycle path or lane. So expect children there too, who may move onto the carriageway.
