E-bike theory test

Do you need a theory test for an e-bike?

Sometimes yes — sometimes no. It depends on speed and age. The two key cases:

Case 1

🚲 E-bike up to 25 km/h

(regular e-bike)

  • 14

    Age 14–15 → Category M theory test required.

  • 16

    From age 16 → no theory test.

Reason: under 16 you need Category M.

Case 2

⚡ E-bike up to 45 km/h

(fast e-bike / "speed pedelec")

  • Always → Category M theory test required.

Reason: legally treated as a moped — Category M is mandatory.

Rules in detail

E-bike rules made simple

Licence, number plate, helmet — what applies when?

Type 1

🚲 Regular e-bike (up to 25 km/h)

The classic e-bike — rides like a normal bicycle.

  • Age 14–16: Category M licence required.

  • From age 16: no licence required.

  • No number plate · no insurance required.

  • ⛑️

    Helmet: recommended, not compulsory.

Type 2

⚡ Fast e-bike (up to 45 km/h)

More like a "moped with pedals" — legally treated as a motorised cycle.

  • Always Category M licence required.

  • 🔢

    Yellow number plate + insurance compulsory.

  • ⛑️

    Helmet compulsory.

  • Rear-view mirror + lights required.

Bottom line — easy to remember

Slow = like a bicycle

Fast = like a moped
