Swiss Moped Licence — 3 Steps

The moped licence is much simpler than the car licence — no first aid course, no learner permit, no VKU, no probationary period.

Step 1

Submit Application

  • No first aid course required — the moped licence is simpler than the car licence.

  • Submit your application at the cantonal road traffic office or municipal authority.

  • Enclose: eye test (max. 24 months old), identity document, passport photo.

  • Minimum age: 14 years (exceptions possible).

Step 2 · Key hurdle

Pass the Theory Test

  • 30 multiple-choice questions with 3 answer options each in 45 minutes.

  • At least 81 out of 90 points (90%) required to pass.

  • Maximum 9 error points allowed.

  • Test languages: German, French or Italian.

  • Test takes place in person at the road traffic office — not available online.

Step 3 · Goal

Category M Licence

  • Der Category M Licence wird per Post zugestellt.

  • Valid for mopeds, electric mopeds and e-bikes up to 45 km/h.

  • No expiry date — the licence is valid indefinitely.

  • With Cat. M you may also ride light mopeds and e-bikes without a licence (up to 20 km/h).
