Moving Off, Reversing & Turning

These manoeuvres are often slow and unexpected for others – which is why special duties of care apply.

Moving off

When moving off from the kerb you are obliged to give way: you must not obstruct other road users. Check the mirror, do the shoulder check and signal moving off with the indicator.

Reversing

  • Only slowly and over short distances.

  • You must be able to oversee the whole carriageway behind you; if visibility is insufficient, use a helper.

  • When reversing you are obliged to wait for the rest of the traffic.

  • Reversing is forbidden on motorways and semi-motorways and at places with poor visibility.

Turning around

Turning around is allowed only if it is possible without danger or obstruction. It is forbidden in particular:

  • on motorways and semi-motorways,

  • at places with poor visibility (bends, crests),

  • before and on level crossings,

  • where signs or markings forbid it.
