Lane entry and turning

Turning Rules:

  • Right Turn: Drivers wishing to turn right must stay on the right-hand side of the road.

Track-In Arrows:

  • Direction Arrows: Lanes for left turns, right turns, or straight travel are marked by white “single lane arrows” pointing in the appropriate direction. Drivers may only enter junctions according to the arrows displayed on their lane.
  • Yellow Arrows: These are exclusively for buses in regular public transport, allowing them to drive in the direction indicated.

Single-Lane Signs:

  • Above the Carriageway: Single lane signs indicate which lanes lead to specific destinations before junctions on multi-lane roads. A downward-pointing arrow points to the center of the lane.
  • Next to the Carriageway: These signs show which lanes lead to specific destinations. The top arrow points to the outermost left lane, the bottom arrow points to the outermost right lane, and the center arrow points to any middle lane.

Bus Lanes:

  • Usage: Bus lanes marked with continuous or interrupted yellow lines and the inscription “BUS” are reserved for buses in public service and, where applicable, trams. Other vehicles may not use these lanes but can cross them if marked with yellow broken lines.

Tram Lanes:

  • Left Turns: If no tram is approaching, drivers turning left may use the tram lane to turn into the bus lane.

Cycle Lanes:

  • Usage: Drivers must keep to the right, and if there’s a cycle lane with a broken line, they must not cross it. When turning right at traffic lights, drivers should avoid using the cycle lane and ensure no cyclists are going straight.

Indicating Changes:

  • Direction Changes: Any change of direction must be announced in good time using turn signals or clear hand signals, especially during lane changes and turns.

Trailer and Load Visibility:

  • Visibility Concerns: Drivers must take special care when changing lanes or turning if their load obstructs visibility. An assistant should help if needed.

Cutting Corners:

  • Left Turns: Drivers must not cut corners when turning left at junctions. Vehicles wishing to turn left from opposite directions must cross to the left.

Overtaking Regulations:

  • Single-Track Roads: Changing lanes to overtake is prohibited except on marked lanes with the same destinations.

Oncoming Traffic:

  • Left Lane Changes: When moving into the left lane, drivers must not occupy space meant for oncoming traffic.

Timing and Positioning:

  • Lane Changes: Drivers must move into their lane in good time, especially when turning at junctions and on narrow roads.

Left Turn Right of Way:

  • Yielding: Before turning left, drivers must yield to oncoming vehicles.
